The Inventive Engineer Poster Contest Rules

Celebrate National Engineering Week in Hawaii and the theme: "Bringing dreams to life."
Start with an existing invention or create one yourself, either real or based on futuristic fantasy idea you have! Make it believable!
Show the invention design and parts and describe the capability and purpose with engineering terms and dimensions.

  • 1) Students’ entries are judged at two levels: Middle and High School. Entries due not later than 8 February 2014.
  • 2) Entries are accepted from public, charter, private and home school students. Contest goals and background are at the Public Service Hosting Web Site promoting interest in Engineering: Engineers Week
  • 3) Entries are judged on clarity and composition appeal of a titled work that conveys to the viewer what the depicted invention is and does, and what laws of physics define its performance. The sketches, specifications, and labels are to include use of metric units and associated magnitudes. The poster highlights the invention’s parts, and capabilities by labels, dimensions, graphs, formulas, multiple sketches or narratives as needed.
  • 4) The invention may be an existing design, or the student’s own real or wishful fantasy machine or design. Remember engineers build big things like roads and dams and tiny things like mouse traps. Leonardo da Vinci’s sketches may be an inspiration.
  • 5) Preferred size is 12 x 18 inch poster sized paper. Minimum size is 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. May be folded in half for mailing. If submitted electronically, use only .jpeg, .doc, and .ppt file types.
  • 6) Posters may be multicolored or mono chromatic. May be a collage combining freehand, drafted, computer generated, and photographic elements. A digital image may be created from a physical poster.
  • 7) Entries content and style are to be choices controlled by the student. Students are encouraged to: A) Speak with their fellow students, parents and teachers to develop their poster ideas. B) Use the internet, software, draftsman and other tools to motivate and generate poster elements and "look".
  • 8) Entries become the property of the event organizer. By submitting an entry, Consent is given to use entrants’ names, likenesses, and poster entries and entry form data for documentation, publication, publicity, and award purposes in all digital and physical media and venues.
  • 9) Entries are to have email date or be postmarked no later than 8 February 2014.
