ENGINEER POSTER CONTEST: Illustrated Engineering Thinking and Inventions in Words, Sketches, Designs, and Math. Submission Deadline is 8 February 2014
The Engineer Poster Contest is a contest that asks students to convey their understanding of engineering skills, methods, products and inventiveness. Participants will design posters that depict a student’s own invention, or give tribute to an existing product or patent. Styles can vary from cartoon to serious graphic artistry. Narrative descriptions ought to include “vocabulary” from the lexicon of engineering, including units of metric measure with corresponding magnitudes appropriate to the product or invention illustrated.
Judges will assess how captivatingly and artfully the poster depicts the invention. The contest will be split into two divisions: Middle School, and High School. Students in public, charter, private, and home schools are invited to participate. Certificates and cash prizes are awarded to winning entries and sponsoring teacher. Top winners will be showcased for a time at the Hawaii State Art Museum.

Consider yourself as if an apprentice in Leonardo’s workshop, and challenged to document or conceive through imagination or close observation of nature and human needs, an invention. Leonardo challenges you, his student, to carefully illustrate your idea in visual, symbolic and language forms: The language of Engineering! Use all the tools and knowledge of today, including employing the internet and computer programs, art materials, and communication skills to aid you in your presentation. Discuss freely with fellow students, teachers, and parents, to evolve your invention/design, present an existing mechanism or system, or describe a fantasy object!
